A stripped hole does not get better on its own

The screw turns and turns and never tightens. Somewhere behind that panel the hole stopped being a hole and became a slot. What you do about it comes down to three choices.

How the three ways of dealing with a stripped hole compare on the things that decide whether the repair lasts.
What matters Bigger screw Pop rivet GripNut
Holds in a hole that is already torn No Yes Yes
The screw comes back out, as often as you like Yes No Yes
Leaves a reusable thread behind No No Yes
What you need to fit it ScrewdriverRivet gunScrewdriver
Load spreads across the panel, not one torn edge No Yes Yes

A pop rivet holds well, but it is one-way: to get the panel off again you drill the rivet out and start over. None of this means the panel is scrap — it means the hole needs a thread put back into it, not a bigger screw forced through.

Four steps, no special tools

About a minute a hole. A hole that has torn out is usually 8 mm already, so most of the time it is a screwdriver and nothing else — no rivet gun, no welding, and never a hand behind the panel.

1
Check the hole is 8 mm 8 mm is the body diameter, and a torn-out hole is usually close to it already. If yours is still ragged or undersized, run a drill or a round file through it to clean it up round.
2
Push the anchor through The flange sits flat on the front face. The body goes through the panel.
3
Tighten the screw The steel body folds outward behind the panel and clamps it between the petals and the flange.
4
Fit your part Back the screw out. The anchor stays set, and you have an M4 thread — use it, undo it, use it again.

⏱ Set the anchor with the supplied screw first, then swap in the screw your part needs. Setting it against the part itself can leave the anchor spinning.

Where a torn-out hole usually is

Bumper covers and splash shieldsThe screw that has been spinning since the last kerb, and the shield now hanging down at one corner.
Licence platesA stripped plate thread put back, without drilling a fresh pair of holes in the bumper.
A torn-out screw hole in a bumper cover beside the same hole repaired with a GripNut anchor
Fender liners and undertraysThe plastic liner behind the wheel that only stays up because two of its six screws still bite.
Engine bay coversRadiator shrouds, air-box lids, the plastic cover that came loose the last time someone was in there.

One hour at a body shop

What a US body shop posts per hour, on average — before any parts $85
One GripNut anchor, one hole $1.24

Frequently Asked Questions

Will these work in drywall?

No. This is the extra-short version, made for material 0–5 mm thick. Standard US drywall is 12.7 mm (1/2"), far too thick for the body to fold in behind. Use a drywall-rated anchor for plasterboard.

What size hole do I drill?

8 mm — that is the body diameter. A hole that has already torn out is usually close to it, so most of the time you are just cleaning it up round.

What screw do they take?

M4. Matching screws are included. Any M4 machine screw of the right length works after that.

How much will one hold?

The manufacturer rates each anchor to 10 kg (22 lb) in suitable material. In thin plastic or a 3 mm door skin the panel gives up long before the anchor does — spread the load over two or three anchors for anything that matters.

Can I take it back out?

The screw, yes — as often as you like; that is the whole point. The anchor body stays set in the panel. To remove it completely, drill out the flange.

Will it survive vibration and car washes?

A set anchor is mechanically clamped to the panel, so it does not back out the way a self-tapper does. Use threadlocker on the screw for anything that lives under the car.

The anchors are zinc-plated carbon steel, so the plating resists corrosion. It is plated steel rather than stainless, so under a car it will meet road salt like any other plated fastener — fine for the job, but not a marine-grade part.

How is this different from your EZ-Lock clips?

EZ-Lock replaces a missing clip in a hole that is still good. GripNut is for when the hole itself is wrecked and no clip will bite any more. Most people end up keeping both in the boot.

Fix the hole, not the whole panel.
